Alumnus One-Year Simulation Complete

By Steven Gagliano | 02/08/2024

When the door to the Mars Dune Alpha habitat at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, opened on Friday, August 2, 2024, a Georgia Tech alumnus emerged after living for a year in simulated Mars conditions.

As part of a NASA-funded study, a crew of four people isolated themselves inside the 3D-printed structure to experience the physical and psychological challenges of a long-duration mission to the Red Planet. The study was designed to provide valuable data for NASA as it plans for future manned missions to Mars.

The Georgia Tech alumnus, who served as the crew's commander, was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the mission, including the scientific experiments, the habitat's operations, and the crew's well-being. The crew conducted dozens of experiments during their stay in the habitat, and the results of their research will help NASA develop new technologies and procedures for future Mars missions.

The one-year simulation was a major milestone in NASA's plans to send humans to Mars. The study provided valuable data on the challenges of living and working on the Red Planet, and it helped NASA to develop new technologies and procedures for future missions.
